The following article was written by Sean Kelsey, Director of Operations, as he shares his perspective on OJ Simpson’s next steps.
Before we look at OJ, let’s look at why people take the risk and drink and drive, then we can apply to OJ.
Why do most people drink and drive?
There are several reasons people drink, peer pressure, stress, addiction but the biggest factor is social. About 85% of all DWI arrests happen after drinking with family, friends, or coworkers.
Alcohol as we all know affects someone’s sense of judgment, so their decision making process is not that of someone who is sober, so I was not surprised when reading an article from recovery.org that states the most common reasons were:
- 40% let friends drive drunk because they’ve done it before
- 20% of men and 7% of women would let a friend drive drunk to avoid an argument.
- Booty calls: 1 in 4 drunk drivers are headed to a “hook-up” location
Another reason for drinking and driving is that the person feels he or she can get away with driving while drunk. An average drunk driver has driven drunk 60 times before the first arrest. He or she does not believe they will be caught or cause an accident.
So why do celebrities drink and drive?
Simple. The same reason non-celebrities do…because they feel they can get away with it. However with celebrities, they feel that they can be above the law, and their celebrity status may prevent them from being charged, however as you can see from the top 75 celebrity arrests below, they were mistaken.

The transition for O.J., after 9 years of being incarcerated will be difficult. He will have to deal with adjusting to life outside of prison, changes in technology, changes in friends, and the strain of being on parole. Most prisoners when being released from prison suffer from what is called Post Incarceration Syndrome which is a serious problem for offenders who are released from correctional institutions. According to DrugRehab.com.
“Post Incarceration Syndrome (PICS) is a mental disorder that occurs in individuals either currently incarcerated or recently released; symptoms are found to be most severe for those who encountered extended periods of solitary confinement and institutional abuse. These symptoms stem from an individual encountering an environment of punishment that provided little opportunity for education, vocational training, or rehabilitation”
So I hope that I am wrong, and I hope that OJ takes his time being incarcerated and uses it to go out and make a difference in people’s lives to right the wrongs in his life, however, based on my conclusion I believe that OJ will be arrested for DWI within 3 months of being released from prison.
